December Saturdays are busy for every caterer around here, so earlier gives you more choice. For a December weekend, early fall is a good time to ask.
A suggestion based on roughly 10 weeks of notice, not a deadline. Nothing is booked until you confirm.
Christmas
December in the DC area runs on two tracks. Office holiday parties fill the first three weeks, and we plan those on our holiday party page. This page is about the rest: tree lightings, Christmas markets, church and school fairs, and the family gatherings from Christmas Eve through New Year.
Christmas is also a federal holiday. Christmas Day falls on Friday, December 25, 2026, and federal offices close that day. The days between Christmas and New Year are a good time for a relaxed family open house, when everyone is in town and nobody wants to cook again.
Event ideas
HOAs and town centers light the tree at dusk; a truck by the green keeps people outside longer.
Crafts and carols inside, hot food at the window outside, with families buying lunch between stalls.
Relatives are in town and the leftovers are gone. Book the truck for an afternoon between December 27 and 30.
